Interview Question in SQL Server Security

Interview Question :: For the same salary (working in IT), would you rather work for Kaiser or at a Carpenters Union

Kaiser is hourly, the Carpenters Union is not. The Carpenters union offers a vehicle and paid gas. Plus you can drive the vehicle 50 miles from your home. - Kaiser is a helpdesk with some exposure to servers... the Union job is as one of two IT guys (doing all IT functions). The Union job provides learning SQL, VB .NET and furthering my Active Directory knowledge. Kaiser is basically a high paying help desk job. However, the new IT manager says that we'll be doing server duties in the future? I'm kind of on the fence about this and wanted other IT people's advice.. I've been working in IT for 10 years. My long-term goal is to become an MCSE (focused on Active Directory, Exchange and network Security). What do you think?

RE: For the same salary (working in IT), would you rather work for Kaiser or at a Carpenters Union?

If your goal is to gain more experience, I think you would have better luck being a big fish in a small company wearing many hats than a small fish in a big company working a help desk. That is, unless one of the benefits of the larger company is paid training in the areas you are interested in. Be wary of future promises (i.e., you'll all be doing server duties in the future) as many midsized companies right now seem slow to grow or change their IT infrastructure (if it's not broke, don't fix it), and a smaller company may provide more opporutinies to introduce new technology and spearhead new projects (less red tape and politics).

I suggest you carefully weight all of the financial, logistical (commute time, etc.), psychological (do you like the people, the environment), and career (where will I be in five years) factors before making a decision.

Just another IT professional's two cents worth...

IT's hard to tell you what to do, but what I would do in that situation is to take the Union job, along with its benefits.
