Interview Question in Service Packs and Patches

Interview Question :: Has anybody else made the move to LAMP because of Vista

I am seriously disappointed with Vista. As a .Net guy, I've run into some problems. SQL Server Express doesn't run on Vista (but it did on XP). I downloaded the SSE Service Pack 2, and I still ran into errors. Also, my good old Access 2000 is no good, from what I here. So then I tried to download MySQL 5.0, and it didn't install, as well.

This sucks because all of the above work fine on XP. My desktop is XP, but my laptop is VIsta. It looks like I might have to dual boot XP and Vista on my laptop to continue to be productive.

However, I have been seriously considering making the jump to LAMP. I'm tired of every time Microsoft comes out with something new it screws up everything else. You think I want to pay for Access 2007 when Access 2000 was just fine for my needs?

Anybody else been perturbed with Vista as a developer?

RE: Has anybody else made the move to LAMP because of Vista?

I've heard that Vista SP 1 is actually XP. (grin)

If you pay that much for software, you shouldn't have to make excuses for it. It should work better than what it replaces. In any other industry, an 'upgrade' that gives you less capability than the thing it replaces would be rightly seen as a travesty, or even as a swindle, as you initially had little choice.

I've developed, taught, and written books on both MS products and LAMP tools for some time now, and although I find the newer MS products quite good (I actually think C# is a pretty great language) I find Microsoft's attitude toward the consumer bewildering.

In all my own web projects, I tend to use LAMP or WAMP, because I can count on it to work. If I don't like something, I can change it.

You should take a look at Linux. Download a LiveCD and check it out. You can run the OS directly from a CD-ROM without making any permanent changes to your system. Talk to somebody familiar with both Linux and Windows (not a Linux evangelist - try to get a balanced opinion) to show you the basic ropes.

You might be pleasantly surprised.

Even if you don't want to go the Linux route, you can run apache, MySQL, and PHP on your Windows machine. Download XAMPP and check it out

This has everything you need to get started while staying in Windows. It installs painlessly (even, I understand on Vista. My students have done it, but I have stayed away from Vista myself)

You don't have to ditch MS, but you should definitely take a look at the alternative. I think you'll find (like I did) the open-source approach to be a breath of fresh air.
