Interview Question in SQL Server Administration

Interview Question :: What course should I do to become and work as a Database Administrator

A Computer Science course?
A Information Technology course?
A Database Administration course? (does that exist?)
A Web Development course?! (I just added this because I heard that some DBA must know a little bit of web development, but I don't know if that is true or false)

Which one?

I think is computer science that I should take, but after graduation, when you start to search for a job can you say that you are a DBA? even though in the resume it says that you have a CS course and not a DBA course? I'm very confuse in this part.

Also, how many programs(or softwares?) a DBA need to know for the job? I heard SQL, Oracle, etc. But do they only work with one program/software or more?

I'll really appreciate your help!

RE: What course should I do to become and work as a Database Administrator?

You can either have a computer science or information technology course. But make sure these course teach you the fundamental of database and web development concept.

For web development, you need to know HTML, XML, JSP or ASP, Java or Dot Net.

But these are not enough.

You need to know the different OS like Windows Server and Unix/Linux. Because the database may be install on these OS and you need to perform administration tasks like adding new users and granting users permission. So you need a Windows/Unix/Linux Administration certification.

You must also know SQL ( a must ) and one or more databases like Oracle, Informix, MySQL or MS SQL.

For Oracle, you can get Oracle Database Administration Certification. Currently, Oracle is very popular.

Oracle also have Oracle Application Server for web application that are connect to the Oracle database.

Same thing, you must learnt to set different level of privileges and password for users to log in into the database.

Real knowledge is experiences, the rest is just theory.

Most companies do not give a fresh graduate who don't have experiences such a responsibilty (DBA). If the person make a mistake and all the customer data in the database are lost. The company may go bankrupt. You should try to get some experiences.
