Interview Question in Stored Procedures

Interview Question :: Why is my internet connection not working? Cannot get any further than google

Basically, since last thursday, it has not been possible to connect to the internet through any of the computers/laptops in our house, nor through the PS3.

On the PS3, when I sign in online, it says "signing in" for about 30 secs before telling me "Error, you have been signed out". I ran a "connection test" and the computer said it could connect to the internet, just not to the PS3 Store.
On the computers, you can reach google, ask jeeves and all other top search engines, perform a search but you cannot then use any of the links on any of the pages. (E.G. if i search BBC, i click the link but the page does not load). Typing the websites ito the address bar does also not work, no favourites, or previously visited pages can be reached.

The connection to our house runs into a netgear router, which then feeds into one desktop, and two wireless boxes. We have tried resetting and re-programming both boxes, and the netgear router, but still cannot go any further than google when using Internet Explorer or Firefox.

We contacted our ISP (Pipex), and they talked us through several procedures trying to solve the problem through DNS settings etc. Eventually they told us to contact a computer technician, (after the £10 phone call), which will do if we cannot solve the problem ourselves, but I wanted to know if anyone else had any suggestions.

Is it possible we need a new router? Or could the problem source back to any wiring?

Before someone smartly asks if it is all plugged in correctly - Yes.

SUMMARY: I can connect to google, perform unlimited searches, but go no further. Google Mail does work, but ofcourse no further links do. The PS3 cannot connect online, and MSN does not work.

Any help appreciated, but the computer techinician will cost more money, so all suggestions considered. Cheers.

My laptop was doing the same thing. I just found this infor while surfing for an answer. This is what I found, hope it helps.

Check and see if you have an IP Address confliction within the network. In other words 2 computers with the same IP addresses. If you do, just change the last number of the string.

Here's how:

Go to Settings (where the Start is at bottom left) and select Network Connections.

Find Wireless Network Connection. Right mouse click on it and go to Properties.

Highlight on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties.

At IP address: , change the last digit of the IP address. Chose a higher number. Chances are the lower numbers are all taken. Click Ok and exit out of all the settings.

Now try to open your internet browser again.

Do you have any firewalls installed? If you do then please disable them, if you have any Anti Virus programs running close them down, try again.

Use the Windows Task Manager and close all programs that look out of place (use Google if in doubt - even by looking at the results you should be able to see which a windows process and which is not).

Hope that works for you

The reson why you can access google and other search engines is because you are working offline. But clicking the link in any of the pages currently stored temporarily in your Harddisk, it will not show up.

- If not the modem/ Router configuration is the problem, am sure its the phone line

it's probably the same case as the PSP wireless - your PS3 scans the area for the signal connection; and the connection probably is low where your ps3 is.

but since it scanned a connection - it can connect.

see if you move your ps3 to another place, and see if it improves (from my 'experience') try to keep if away from roofed areas (like a shelf)

hope i helped
