Interview Question in SQL Server 2005 Driver for PHP

Interview Question :: Windows 2000 Server vs. 2003/2008 Server

Hi, I'm looking to setup a couple of web servers (hitting SQL Server 2005 Express and using PHP) on a very small budget and can get Windows 2000 Server for very cheap.

How does the general stability compare to 2003/2008?

I don't need any of the new features in 2003/2008 server and the server(s) would be used for web only (nothing too complex), but I'd like something that is pretty stable.

If you could get 2000 Server for free (or next to it) would it be worth using or is the general stability of 2003/2008 Server far better? I realize there are some security issues which doesn't really concern me too much.

Thanks!

You can look on ebay, but microsoft doesn't release their older operating systems for free once new ones are available (does a car dealer give away last year's model when the new year's model arrives?).

General stability in my opinion is great... but the problem is IIS was re-written in Server 2003 and is far more reliable and less susceptible to hacking. I would agree with the previous commentor, go buy web edition - it's less expensive and more suitable to be, go figure, a web server.

I think it's very foolish to not concern yourself with security issues - not only does it put you at risk, it also puts your visitors at risk - if you're hacked by a malicious person who then sticks malware on your site, your visitors now get infected by you - who has said that you don't care...

For budget web server, get Web Edition. Decide the number of processor and RAM used for each edition of Windows Server Family.
